Salamanca is a famous university city with great cultural tradition. The city is small sized and has calm and pleasant surroundings for study, culture and diversion. It is one of the most charming cities in Spain. Called "Little Rome" to be based between hills, the city is the cradle of the Spanish Plateresque Renaissance architecture, thanks to the characteristic golden Villamayor stone.
The town is well-known for having the oldest University in Spain and one of the oldest in all Europe. In Salamanca, the inhabitants speak the purest Spanish in all Spain. Therefore it is enormously popular for people worldwide whom love to learn this language. It is a cosmopolitan city for students, where Spaniards and those from other parts of the world are everywhere hoping to meet new friends.
Capital city of the province of the same name, Salamanca is located in Central-west Spain, in the historical region of Castile and Leon. Surrounded by the Tormes River, its number of inhabitants goes up to 200,000, whom around 40,000 are university students. The distance of Salamanca with Madrid is 200 km and with the Portuguese border 120 km.
Climate of the capital is of continental type, with cold winters and dry and hot summers. The average temperature is of 4ºC in January and 24ºC in summer, although at this time it is possible to reach 40ºC hot.
Salamanca fairs are a good time to go to the city; they are celebrated during the first two weeks in September. These days the town offers a great variety of cultural and playful activities for all people. June 12th dates the celebration in honour of the patron saint of Salamanca, in which musical acts in the streets and a bullfighting festival are celebrated. Other important date is the "Monday of waters", in April, a celebration in which families and friends join themselves with a lunch in the countryside.
